A. SDMA Library Report
The Board will hear an update on Library Programming in the SDMA. - Brian Seguin
As the Board is aware, there have been some recent inquiries and public comments from a limited number of community members in the SDMA related to how materials are reviewed and selected, as well as how students access both physical and digital content within SDMA Libraries.
Selection of Materials for Library Media Centers within the SDMA falls under Policy 361 Educational Materials Selection and Evaluation. In alignment with this policy the responsibility for this is delegated to the SDMA Library Media Staff. In addition, as stated in the policy, should a district resident raise a concern about instructional materials used in the district's educational program, the board has delegated the responsibility for review of materials to a Reconsideration Committee made up of citizens and educators who make their decisions based upon careful study of the material in question.
Over the past year, SDMA library media staff have met to update the SDMA Library Plan, which was presented and approved by the board in 12/12/2022 and to review current practices to ensure they are up to date and in alignment with the expectations of policy 361. In addition, staff have developed additional guidance documents that will be posted within all SDMA libraries and on the district website to help with communication and understanding of current selection practices.
Students in the SDMA are able to review items available within the SDMA Library system within Destiny Discover, the library catalog system, that is used to look up and request items within SDMA libraries. Students may also use SORA, the SDMA digital library platform, that houses e-books, e-magazines, and audio books. Both systems have parameters in place that limit checkout to approved grade level ranges.
