The Dunn County Historical Society's Rassbach Museum will hold a Moon Tree Dedication on Friday, October 4 at 4:30 p.m. on the museum grounds. Please join us to celebrate this unique living artifact to our community!
The Rassbach Museum was selected to receive a living piece of spaceflight history to promote science, history, technology, engineering and mathematics: a seedling grown from a tree seed that flew around the moon on NASA’s Artemis I mission in late 2022. NASA and the USDA Forest Service distributed seedlings of five different species (ours is a Sycamore) to create new ways for communities on Earth to connect with humanity’s exploration of space.
It is believed to be the only Moon Tree in the state of Wisconsin!
The first moon trees were grown from 500 seeds carried around the moon on the Apollo 14 mission in 1971. NASA revived the program in 2022 by carrying 1,000 seeds on the Artemis I mission. The Artemis program seeks to reestablish a human presence on the Moon and demonstrate technologies and business approaches needed for future scientific studies, including exploration of Mars.
