Rep. Sargent’s Statement on Governor Walker’s Call for a School Safety Special Session

MADISON – State Representative Melissa Sargent (D-Madison) released the following statement on Governor Walker’s last-minute call for a school safety special session:

“We already have a school safety plan—State Superintendent Tony Evers introduced it more than a week ago now. Leave it to Governor Walker to reinvent the wheel and then try to take credit for it. If Governor Walker cares so much about school safety, where was he yesterday when he had 3,000 Wisconsin students knocking on his office door?

But after spending 2,627 days in office allowing gun violence go unaddressed, when you’re among the ten most disliked governors in America, and you’re 236 days out from re-election, you might do just about anything to salvage what’s left of your time in office. As per usual, Governor Walker does too little, too late.

Unless you count the time he yanked the plug on school security funding during his first term in office, Governor Walker has pretty much spent his entire career offering nothing more than thoughts and prayers to victims of gun violence. Unless this special session includes things like universal background checks, lethal violence protective orders, and reinstating the 48-hour waiting period, it’s just another an empty gesture fails to do anything meaningful to address gun violence in Wisconsin.”
