Evers recall effort fails

Despite claiming last week that the Evers recall campaign had sufficient signatures to force a recall election, this morning organizer Misty Polewczynski announced that the campaign did not have enough signatures to continue. The signatures were due at the Wisconsin Elections Commission office tomorrow, Tuesday Oct. 27. At the most recent elections commission meeting the commission stated that they had not been able to contact the recall campaign to set  up a time to return the signatures.

In a Facebook post this morning Polewczynski said

It is with a heavy heart we announce that after proofing and what came in over the weekend we have fallen short. We do not have enough signatures to turn in.

There was some question about the campaign and the organizers after Polewczynski made a Facebook post last week before announcing that there were enough signatures, saying she would "make up some crap" while talking to reporters. Even in normal circumstances collecting sufficient legitimate signatures to recall a sitting governor is a huge undertaking, requiring an organized effort. The recall effort was plagued with some internal issues, including one circulator who changed her mind about having her signature on the petitions, and who refused to turn in some of the petitions from Marinette County.

Polewczynski would not state how many signatures had been collected, but did state that the petitions would be destroyed.
