Menomonie Singers - When Silence Breaks

Image

The theme for the upcoming autumn concerts by The Menomonie Singers is "When Silence Breaks." Breaking silence refers to discussing subjects that have previously been unaddressed or left unspoken for extended periods. Brian Klein, the choir’s conductor, suggests that engaging with works by lesser-known composers resembles exploring unfamiliar musical conversations.

For example, few are acquainted with the French composer Lili Boulanger, who, at a young age was the first female winner of the prestigious music composition prize, the Prix de Rome. She remained relatively obscure compared to her renowned sister, Nadia, an influential composition teacher of several prominent figures in American music. Lili wrote music for voices, strings, piano, organ, and orchestra. The choir will perform her Hymn to the Sun which was composed in 1912. It is rich harmonically and demonstrates the shifting tonalities so prevalent at the time.

To continue the unique conversation, some of the other lesser-known composers on the program are three based in Minnesota – Jocelyn Hagen, Kyle Pederson, and Matthew Culloton.

Hagen composes primarily for voice: solo, chamber and choirs, but has also composed for chamber, wind, and orchestral ensembles. She has explored large-scale multi-media works, electro-acoustic music, dance, and opera. The piece on the choir’s program is On My Dreams which utilizes a poem by Yeats. It has a delicate and intricate accompaniment not often heard in choral music.

Kyle Pederson’s works have been commissioned and recorded by All State/Honors choirs, and youth, church, college, and professional choirs around the world. Kyle enjoys working at the intersection of the sacred and secular, and his lyrics and music invite the choir and audience to be agents of hope, grace, and compassion in the world. With Pederson’s piece, Hands Are Knockin’, the Menomonie choir is called upon to sing in Arabic, in a prayer exhorting all to open minds, hearts and reach out to others.

Matthew Culloton conductor of The Singers in the Twin Cities, not only composes and conducts, he has also worked as a classical recording producer, and choirmaster. His tenor and baritone work featured on the program, Let the Music Rise, was commissioned by the Staples, Minnesota, Men’s Chorus with a poem by one of its singers, David Bengtson. The piece speaks to the power and comfort of choral music in dark times.

Performances are November 15 at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1120 Cedar Street, Eau Claire; and November 16 at Our Savior’s Lutheran, 910 9th Street East, Menomonie. Both concerts begin at 2 p.m. There is no ticket fee but a suggested donation of $10 is greatly appreciated to defray expenses of the concerts.

Other works in this musical conversation include works by Marques Garrett, May Erlewine, a sacred work by Felix Mendelssohn, a finale from the musical, Titanic, and an arrangement of the old Scottish tune, Loch Lomond.

The Menomonie Singers is a non-profit music organization started in 1989. This adult community choir performs at various venues in Menomonie and western Wisconsin. Singers are a mix of many professions, including UW-Stout faculty members. The group frequently sings four-part, a cappella music.

The choir is looking for new members to expand the group to 40. Auditions will be held again in January with rehearsals beginning again shortly after auditions for concerts in the spring. Interested singers should contact Juliana Schmidt, Executive Director and founder, at [email protected].

Menomonie Singers Concert

Image

On April 26 and 27, The Menomonie Singers will perform Vivaldi’s Gloria and other selections by Eric Whitacre, Elaine Hagenberg, Rupert Lang, Leonard Bernstein, and an Alice Parker/Robert Shaw arrangement. The Gloria will be accompanied by local musicians.

Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Eau Claire hosts the choir on April 26 at 2 pm. The Singers will present the same program at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Menomonie on April 27 at 2 pm. The suggested donation is $10.

The Vivaldi Gloria, one of three Glorias by Antonio Vivaldi, was composed possibly in 1715, and is a sacred work, meaning it is for religious purposes. It is made up of 12 movements or sections, which sections contain choral, solo or small ensemble singing in Latin. Several sections of the Gloria reflect the theme of the concert: “Lift Up and Give Thanks”. For example, in the first movement which is entitled, “Gloria”, the translation is Glory to God in the highest. Again, looking at the fourth movement, Gratias Agimus Tibi, we find a text of gratitude reflective of the theme: We give thanks to you for your great glory.

Eric Whitacre’s Sing Gently evokes the yearning and gratitude of singing together especially in difficult times. The piece was written in 2020 when many choirs were reduced to filming themselves singing a single part of a piece, and then uploading their video to a platform which would then put all the videos together for a single performance of the work. 17,572 singers from 129 countries come together to perform Sing Gently, composed in response to the global pandemic.

Sara Teasdale’s poem, Refuge, is featured in Elaine Hagenberg’s choral work of the same name. Accompanied by cello and piano, the work opens with haunting cello music underlaid by a frantic, racing piano accompaniment, sounding like a lament. Ultimately, the piece brings us to the inspiring message of gratitude that singing can become a refuge, and as long as one can sing, one is free.

The uplifting choral work, Make Our Garden Grow, by Leonard Bernstein, from the musical, Candide, caps the Singers’ program. Its message is one of appreciation, and that we will do the best we can in difficult times.

“We’ll do the best we know.
We’ll build our house and chop our wood
And make our garden grow.”

The choir is looking for new members to expand the group to 40. Auditions will be held again in August with rehearsals beginning again shortly after auditions for concerts in the fall. Interested singers should contact Juliana Schmidt, Executive Director and founder, at [email protected]

Terminal Three at the Mabel Tainter Theater, Friday April 11, 7:30 pm

Image

Lovers of music in this region have a rare opportunity on Friday, April 11, when a unique and highly skilled trio lands in the Chippewa Valley. At 7:30 on that date, Menomonie’s Mabel Tainter Theater hosts Terminal Three in concert. Three talented musicians join to combine ancient and modern, East and West, into a stirring mix of “progressive world music” — with runways into the future.

Guitar/bouzouki virtuoso, vocalist, and composer Greg Herriges plays his instruments with a unique approach honed by his studies of Asian and numerous international styles. Michael Bissonette juggles an array of percussion, including frame drums, cajon, air hose, Aztec death whistle and Glockenspiel. Rundio performs on the futuristic Chapman stick — a 10-stringed instrument that is tapped to sing like a bass, a piano, or an electronic orchestra. The music ranges from Mediterranean folk to Western pop, worldly surf-jrock, and dazzling all-of-the-above originals. You’ll hear unusual renditions of familiar tunes, and be treated to some of the most compelling new sounds.

Press Quotes:
“Majestic, epic, gorgeous, inspirational” —TUNEDLOUD
“WORLD MUSIC AT ITS BEST”—Skope magazine
“…the evocative energy of Marc Ribot mixed with the whimsical folk attitude of the Decemberists.” —The Bandcamp Diaries

Greg Herriges, founder and musical director, has been recipient of grants and fellowships from the Bush and McKnight Foundations, MN State Arts Board, and the twin cities’ Metro Regional Arts Council. Having released 4 CDs of original and trad. “whirled” music, he is also a soundtrack artist and music director for film and theater, and author of instructional music books published by Hal Leonard, specializing in world music for guitar and bouzouki. As a resident of Eau Claire in the 80s, he honed his performance skills with local bands.

Louis Sinclair, aka rundio, makes music including ambient/environmental washes of sound, classical and progressive rock and jazz, and his stunning originals. His state-of-the-art performance rig allowas a tremendous range of sonic expression, combining the modern technologies of looping, digital simulation, sampling, and synthesis with an emotive expression that can only come from a lifetime of “old school” performance.

Michael Bissonnette’s varied musical career has taken him from Massachusetts to California to Minneapolis, where he has become one of the area’s most sought-after drummers. He has mastered percussion instruments from around the world including the berimbau, cuica, and pandeiro of Brazil; the doumbek from the Middle East; the djembe, log drums and caxixi from West Africa; the Irish bodhran; and the American drum kit. He has performed and recorded with: Katie McMahon (the original voice of Riverdance); Laura MacKenzie; Heart of the City; Boiled in Lead; Glen Helgeson/Axis Mundi; Louis and Clarke; and many others.

The Mabel Tainter concert begins at 7:30pm. Tickets are $22 per seat, including all handling charges. Seats can be purchased online at: https://ci.ovationtix.com/32695/production/1211835?performanceId=11516502
