Downtown Menomonie's anchor store, Town and Country Antiques (244 Main St. East, Menomonie), burned overnight and is a total loss. The Wisconsin DOT reports that fire crews were called to the scene around 10:15 PM Tuesday night. Various media report that nobody was injured in the fire.
The building has housed various businesses over the years, but recently was an antique store with booths rented by various antique dealers.
According to Menomonie Police, several roads in downtown Menomonie are still closed at this time as the fire department works to clear out and secure the area. The closed roads are indicated on the map. We hope to have more information later in the day.
Although it appears that the only building destroyed was Town and Country (the Menomonie Fire Department did a great job of keeping it from spreading), it also appears that some of the other adjoining businesses will have smoke damage to their merchandise, particularly the Mood clothing store next door.
Very little appeared salvageable from the fire, although while I was there the crew tearing down the remains of the building extracted a safe and some computer equipment.
The City of Menomonie and Menomonie Fire Department released the following this afternoon:
Community Gratitude for Fire Response Efforts
The City of Menomonie extends heartfelt thanks to all who responded to the downtown fire on the evening of May 20th.
We are especially grateful for the swift and courageous efforts of the Menomonie Fire Department, as well as the invaluable support from our neighboring departments: Colfax, Boyceville, Durand, Eau Claire, Elk Mound Fire, and Colfax Rescue, who staffed our station during the incident.
We also want to thank the City Street Department, Water Department, and Xcel Energy for their dedicated on-scene support. Their coordination was essential to maintaining safety during the fire, particularly with high-voltage power lines located near the affected building.
A sincere thank you goes to CR Bryan & Sons for their excellent heavy equipment work during the response.
Finally, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to the many community members who generously provided food and beverages to support our responders throughout the night—your kindness did not go unnoticed.
