MADISON – Maggie Gau, Campaign Manager for Tony for Wisconsin, released the following statement on Scott Walker’s response to Tony Evers call for a special session on school safety following the shooting in Parkland, Florida, that took the lives of 17 students and staff:

“Today’s announcement is simply another tone-deaf, desperate election-year stunt by Governor Walker.  Our kids, our educators and our communities are not only calling for financial assistance in increasing school security, but more importantly they’re pleading for more mental health resources to help our kids in crisis and to finally take meaningful action on gun safety, like universal background checks which 81% of Wisconsinites support.  A big price-tag means nothing if you’re not actually addressing the problem, which Scott Walker has a nasty habit of doing.

“Thousands of students across Wisconsin marched out of their classrooms yesterday, pleading with their elected officials to take action on meaningful gun safety legislation and now Scott Walker wants to hand the keys over to the guy who wants to arm teachers and put more guns in our classrooms.  It’s no surprise our kids are scared and calling for action.”
