Culver’s of Menomonie to feature UW-Stout themed Blue Devil Food Cake frozen custard on Friday of homecoming weekend

It’s homecoming week at University of Wisconsin-Stout, and Culver’s of Menomonie is joining the festivities with an exclusive Blue Devils-themed frozen custard flavor. Blue Devil Food Cake will be featured on Friday, Oct. 25, as the ButterBurger behemoth’s Flavor of the Day.

Here’s the scoop: On Oct. 1, UW-Stout launched a poll inviting the UW-Stout community and supporters to vote for one of four custom homecoming flavors. Within 24 hours, nearly 700 supporters had weighed in, but by the time the poll closed on Sunday, Oct. 13, more than 1,500 votes had been submitted.

The campus community will get an insider taste of the excusive flavor on Monday, Oct. 21, at a Stout Custard Kick-Off Event, as will participants in the annual Blue Devil Glow Run on Thursday, Oct. 24, before the flavor is officially unveiled to the public on Friday, Oct. 25. The homecoming parade, UW-Stout open house and football game, among other events, are on Saturday, Oct. 26.

The sweetest part? Whether you grab a scoop on Friday at lunch or on the way to the Fanetti Center to watch the Blue Devil hockey team take on Saint Mary’s, Culver’s is donating 10% of Friday’s Flavor of the Day sales to support the UW-Stout Student Emergency Fund.

Oaklawn Inn Classical Concert series: Jill Heinke Moen - Nov. 10th

The Oaklawn Inn will host another recital in its fledgling Classical Music Series on Sunday, November 10, 2024, at 3 pm, with flutist, Jill Heinke Moen.  Heinke Moen calls herself a “universitile musician” and it’s easy to see why. She not only plays classical music but also jazz and rock (she plays bass guitar). She has studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Royal College of Music in London and has won many awards for her flute playing.

Flutist, Tim Lane, will join her on the program. Refreshments will follow the recital.

Seating is limited. Tickets can be purchased at oaklawninn.com.

The Oaklawn Inn has historic connections to Menomonie’s past. Built in 1889 by the Tainter family, one of the founders of Menomonie and builders of the Mabel Tainter Theater, the Inn was once surrounded by a stock farm and horse racing tracks.  Andrew Tainter was a horse racing enthusiast. The Inn has been beautifully renovated to its former Victorian splendor.  It now operates as a bed and breakfast.

CVTC district board approves flat tax rate for 2024-2025

Chippewa Valley Technical College approved maintaining a tax rate of 66 cents per $1,000 of valuation for 2024-25. This flat rate is attributed to the increase in net new construction and property values.

Caleb Cornelius, CVTC vice president of administration and chief strategy officer, said new construction in the CVTC district, which includes 11 counties, increased by 1.69 percent; and overall property values increased by nearly 8.12 percent.

However, the College’s proposed tax levy increased by 8.1 percent from the 2023-2024 levy. Cornelius said increased costs to the College, including debt service costs, are the reason.

The District Board set the levy increase of $2,092,097 at its meeting Monday. The approved tax levy for fiscal year 2023-2024 was set at $25,822,828 and will increase to $27,914,925.

With the flat tax rate -- the rate property taxpayers owe per $1,000 in valuation – a person with a $150,000 home will pay $99 in property taxes for the year to support the technical college.

The CVTC board is required to certify its levy by November 1 each year.
