Writing History and Genealogy Series: Dr. Kate is on Her Way!

Thursday, February 27, 6-7pm. Becky Adamski Krische will continue our history and genealogy series with a look at a Wisconsin historical figure - Dr. Kate Pelham Newcomb. We'll hear how Becky researched Dr. Kate's life to write this middle-grade biography.
The Book:
Meet Dr. Kate! She was a medical doctor from 1931-1956 in Northern Wisconsin who specialized in delivering babies and pediatric care. Dr. Kate is remarkable for many reasons. As a medical doctor, she expertly handled it all: immunizations, common colds, burns, delivering babies, poisonings and even gunshot wounds! Without a hospital, Dr. Kate was challenged to work independently. For years, she traveled to patients by car and relied on the items in her medical bag. In the snowy winter months, she regularly snowshoed to those in need of urgent medical care.
Dr. Kate deeply loved her community. She made efforts to improve water quality, milk quality, oversee medical treatment of youth camps and began an effort to build a community hospital. Her devotion to the local community led to Dr. Kate becoming a national celebrity. Dr. Kate was featured on a popular television show and in national magazines for her remarkable talents as a doctor and love of caring for others.
Dr. Kate faced many challenges, but her deep passion for caring for others caused her to meet those challenges with resilience and practical thinking.

Writing Genealogy Series: From Binghamton to the Battlefield

Thursday, April 3, 6-7pm. Amy Truesdell continues the genealogy series. She'll talk about how she researched and wrote about her great-great-grandfather Rollin who was a Union soldier during the Civil War.
The Book:
From Binghamton to the Battlefield draws the reader alongside Rollin B. Truesdell, a prolific letter-writer and an early enlistee in the 27th NY Volunteers, a regiment that was in the thick of some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. Rollin wrote with clarity and wit of what he saw and felt as a Union soldier on the battlefield, and in the army camps where soldiers were tormented by disease as well as the slow passage of time. Rollin mustered into service as an eager recruit and returned home a war-weary, battle-tested veteran disillusioned by the unseemly political machinations of war, yet steadfast in his commitment to victory for the North. With the 100+ letters the Truesdell family preserved as the backbone for the book, Rollin's great-great-granddaughter wove supporting political and military context around the letters to tell Rollin's story.
