Kaleidoscope

Make a simple kaleidoscope, and learn about the science behind this light bending toy! Kaleidoscopes are devices with two or more mirrors tilted to each other at an angle, (usually enclosed in a tube) so that one or more objects on one end of these mirrors are shown as a regular symmetrical pattern when viewed from the other end, due to repeated reflection, presenting in an ever-changing view as it's rotated.

Hope in Turbulent Times

Saturday, August 3, 3:30-4:30pm. Join Sr. Simone Campbell in a conversation about what gives people hope in an era defined by a lot of anxiety. Building on her award-winning book Hunger for Hope Sister Simone seeks to convene people of different perspectives to learn about the local lived reality; especially in places which tend to only pop onto the national scene when things are going terribly. What is lifting people up? And where will Sister Simone find common ground with folks she meets along the way, who may have very different experiences and backgrounds than hers?
Sister Simone Campbell is a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient who you might know from her work with Nuns on the Bus. In July/August, she's traveling through smaller cities in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin to host a series of conversations - hoping to listen and learn from people about what brings them together and gives them hope.
Sister Simone's career has been focused on caring for the marginalized; this tour is a unique extension of that, focused on the political other. We think this is an opportunity to hear from these people through an adept interlocutor - Sister Simone has led community conversations like this before in rural areas and in the South. She consistently comes across thought provoking, meaningful individuals with stories that we think are worth exploring and sharing.
Simone takes the stories she gathers and uses them to open up audiences to hear other perspectives - as she puts it, softening hearts and opening minds to a more complex reality. She's a fascinating thinker, and definitely a rare character in her ability to do this work - and genuinely get people talking and sharing of themselves.

Mom, Dad...Can We Talk?

Thursday, October 3, 6-7pm. Join, Dick Edwards, Retired Mayo Clinic Eldercare Specialist, for conversations with families facing the issues and concerns of aging parents.
Learn how to have success in this unique, sometimes challenging, time in family life, when our parents are aging. It's easy for some, not so easy for others. Let's talk about it, and learn from the experience of others.

The Book

Mom, Dad...Can We Talk? Helping Our Aging Parents with the Insight and Wisdom of Others is a read-me-first for adult children dealing with the issues and concerns of aging parents. It is conversational, sometimes humorous and poignant, always encouraging and helpful. It is written for adult children to help them stop and think, to anticipate, communicate, navigate, and, yes, to celebrate this phase of family life and the parent-child relationship.
The book is rich with nearly 100 personal stories and quotes from adult children that help personalize and humanize support for elderly parents and the final stage of the parent-child relationship, to help ensure the best possible outcome - that of no regrets.
It includes practical advice for initiating caring conversations such as: Mom, we're worried about you living alone. and Mom, Dad, tell us what you want us to do. and Sister, I need your help with all this. and Dad has a lady friend! Also, helpful hints on how to better understand and manage the Big D's of aging parents: dementia, drinking, depression and driving. Livestream
