LIVE MUSIC: D. Janakey

D. Janakey's folk songs ride the edge between autobiographical and transcendental story telling. Drawing comparisons to Prine & Paul Simon, these are songs that ring with life. They breath and sway, and then float away. Throughout his nine years of playing live music, Janakey has shared the stage with Dave Simmonette of Trampled by Turtles, Mason Jennings, Ezra Bell, Haley Bonar, Boris Mccutchen, and Them Coulee Boys.

The Music and the Muse: French Homages and Inspirations for Oboe

The University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire Department of Music and Theatre Arts presents a faculty recital by Dr. Christa Garvey in the Phillips Recital Hall at the Haas Fine Arts Center (121 Water Street Eau Claire, WI 54701) Admission is FREE. Doors open 15 minutes before start time.

Livestream available (upon authorization): https://linktr.ee/uwecmta

This recital explores the profound relationship between artistic inspiration and musical creation through four French composers spanning three centuries. The program features: Marin Marais's elegant reworking of traditional court dances; Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin, originally for solo piano, a personal memorial where each movement honors friends lost in the Great War; Silvestrini's Trois Duos which translate impressionist paintings into sonic landscapes of light and atmosphere; and Poulenc's luminous Oboe Sonata, his final completed work written as tribute to Sergei Prokofiev. Together, these works reveal how composers transform their muses-- dance, memory, visual art, and fellow artists--into sublime musical expression.

Featuring:
Nicholas Phillips, piano
Steven Maijala, oboe

Park Evans @ 2 Roots

Currently living in Seattle, guitarist Park Evans performs around the U.S. and Canada with vintage swing/rockabilly/country outfit Birch Pereira and the Gin Joints.

Originally from Ithaca, New York he grew up studying with classical guitarist Karl Wolff and British fingerstyle master Martin Simpson. Evans moved to Minnesota to attend Saint Olaf College where he studied composition and classical guitar. In Minneapolis he studied jazz guitar with Kevin Daley and Dean Magraw.

Evans has performed in multiple groups in the twin cities including genre-bending jazz projects Spirit of Chanhassen (led by Norah Jones and Mark Giuliani bassist Chris Morrisey), Enormous, Fire Bell, and the Park Evans Quintet, indie rock with Corey Palmer & Love Trade, and reggae/world music with New Primitives. He has worked extensively with jazz vocalists Sophia Shorai and Katie Gearty as well as collaborating with cellists Michelle Kinney and Jacqueline Ultan, guitarist Mike Michel, and legendary bassist Anthony Cox (Stan Getz, John Scofield).

He has released 5 recordings of his original music; 'Impossible Party' (2003), 'Surviving Desire' (2006), 'Satori for a Hungry Ghost' (2012), 'Impossible Vacation' (2015), and 'Incendios' (2018). He also works as a studio musician and can be heard on numerous sessions including jazz, rock, alt-country, reggae, and folk and as a music educator with over 20 years of experience teaching.

Park Evans' guitar playing is emotive, vocal in quality. Mastering effected sound is like mastering another instrument and Park has married his guitar to his effects organically. -Jazz Police

An accomplished guitarist..draws upon his classical background to create a variety of moods that perfectly compliment the arrangement...refreshingly tasteful guitar playing..fans of John Scofield will enjoy the contemplative technique that Evans brings to the table - All About Jazz

Building Happier Communities (and Making Great Friends Along the Way)

Dr. Richard Kyte, Director of the D. B. Reinhart institute for Ethics in Leadership and Endowed Professor of Ethics at Viterbo University, will discuss ways to build happier communities and finding third places to make friends.

His Book:

Finding Your Third Place

An exciting new look at the essential gathering spaces in our society where friendships are formed, relationships are nurtured, and the tapestry of community is woven.

Do you have a third place? Your first place is home, your second place is work, and your third place is where you go to socialize and build friendships. Yet, for several reasons, many people today find themselves without a third place of their own. At a time when our nation is facing an epidemic of loneliness and communities are suffering from a loss of trust, low levels of engagement, despair, and political polarization, what if the answer to many of our problems lies in a simple idea? What if we just need to pay attention to the places where we find ourselves?

Richard Kyte, PhD, combines storytelling, social science, and philosophy to explore:

What makes a third place
Factors that create and support vibrant communities
The role of hospitality in creating belonging and social connection
How third places foster friendships and bind us to others in our community
What it takes to find and create a third place of your own
