Courtney Hartman - The 715 Series

Courtney Hartman, a Wisconsin-based, Colorado-born guitarist, singer, writer and producer, has spent 15 years deftly knitting together music communities across the bluegrass, folk and indie scenes. She turned early acclaim (including a 2014 GRAMMY nomination for her work with folk quintet Della Mae) into true partnerships, writing and recording with an ever-growing family of fellow artists. Popmatters calls Courtney a real-life folk troubadour and scholar, informed by her travels and the relationships that she's built through them, and Acoustic Guitar Magazine says she is a songwriter that delights and disturbs. Her first two albums, Ready Reckoner and Glade, featured collaborations with Gregory Alan Isakov, Anaïs Mitchell, Bill Frisell and Sam Amidon. Over the past decade, Courtney has spent time in 28 different countries, seeking to bridge cultural divides through music diplomacy and creative cooperation. Her upcoming release, With You, is a richly collaborative album centered around the themes of care and motherhood. It will be released independently on November 14 and includes performances by Watchhouse, The Nunnery, Phil Cook and more.

Nick Foytik at River Bend Winery

Growing up in the Northwoods of Wisconsin might not seem like the best place to hear and learn Rock n' Roll, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Blues, and Roots, however music has a tendency to find individuals who are looking and willing to create it. Now celebrating his 30th year of playing guitar and performing, a Nick Foytik performance features the originality of a self-taught musician that constantly seeks ways to improve, a professionality that comes with years of traveling and practicing, and an energy that mirrors his undying love for playing music.

Nick has recorded two albums (Up and Downstream and About Time), both featuring 100% original material. He has been touring for the past 15 years, playing the finest wineries, breweries, and bars the Midwest has to offer. Nick has also played a number of festivals and community concert series through the years, including Bonfire Music Festival at Driftless Music Gardens, Jam 4 Jam, Cheech's Deecefest, Blues on the Chippewa, and Tuesday Night Blues.

Symphony Band & Wind Symphony Artist in Residence Concert

The UWEC Wind Symphony and Symphony Band perform their second concert of the semester and are joined by artist in residence James Stephenson. The bands will perform a variety of standard and contemporary compositions for wind band including James Stephenson's Symphony No. 4, Lonesome Valley Folk Suite, Starts and Stripes Fanfare, Hymn for Us, and Chorale in Blue. The bands will also perform works by Erika Svanoe, Dana Wilson, and Ida Gotkovsky.

Dr. John R. Stewart, Dr. Phillip Ostrander, and James Stephenson, conductors.

Livestream available (upon authorization): https://linktr.ee/uwecmta

To learn more and donate visit: https://linktr.ee/uwecbands

Artist in Residence:
James Stephenson is a highly sought-after arranger and conductor, rounding out his constantly busy schedule. His arrangements have been performed/recorded/broadcast by virtually every major orchestra in the country, including the Boston Pops, Cincinnati Pops, New York Pops and more. On the podium, Stephenson has led orchestras in Chattanooga, Bozeman, Charleston, Ft. Myers, Modesto, and Wyoming, in addition to numerous concert bands.

Leading American orchestras, instrumentalists, and wind ensembles around the world have performed the music of Chicago based composer James M. Stephenson, both to critical praise and the delight of audiences. The Boston Herald raved about straightforward, unabashedly beautiful sounds, suggesting Stephenson deserves to be heard again and again! A formal sense of melody and tonality characterize his music, each embedded in a contemporary soundscape. These qualities, coupled with the composer's keen ability to write to each occasion, have led to a steady stream of commissions and ongoing projects.
