Oscar Wilde: The Legacy of a Scandal

UW-Stout Professor of English and Oscar Wilde scholar, Joan Navarre, will introduce and moderate an Oscar Wilde Birthday Event: live streaming from the British Library. Merlin Holland, the grandson of Oscar Wilde, will be speaking with noted actor Rupert Everett about Oscar Wilde's life and legacy.

Oscar Wilde's life in the limelight is well known. He continues to be celebrated for his sparking comedies and timeless wit. What is not well known are the myths and legends that arose after his death. Oscar Wilde died in November 1900. He had been exiled in Paris, chased by scandal, and broken by prison life. A new book, After Oscar: the Legacy of a Scandal, written by Wilde's only grandson, sheds light on the legacy of Oscar Wilde. This British Library event, taking place on Oscar Wilde's birthday, features Merlin Holland in conversation with Rupert Everett. They will discuss details of the remarkable posthumous life of one of our most celebrated literary and cultural figures.

Jazz Composition Concert

This concert will feature UWEC student, faculty and alumni compositions and arrangements!

The University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire Department of Music and Theatre Arts presents Jazz Compositions performed by university jazz ensembles in Gantner Concert Hall at the Haas Fine Arts Center (121 Water Street Eau Claire, WI 54703) Admission is FREE. Doors open 15 minutes before start time.

Livestream available (upon authorization): https://linktr.ee/uwecmta
To learn more and donate visit: https://linktr.ee/uwecmta

The invitation to compose came during the first week of classes, making the composition completion a four-week project. Some of the students featured have had experience writing big band arrangements and compositions before. But for many of the students, this is their first time writing for large ensemble. Learning how to write and arrange is an important skill that will benefit even after graduation.

All the pieces turned out great with the guidance and encouragement of Dr. Aaron Hedenstrom, so come out to the concert on October 16th, 7:30pm in Gantner Concert Hall to hear their stories and cheer them on!

With a career that has taken him from the bedside to sold-out comedy tours around the world, Nurse Blake celebrates the hard work of nurses and healthcare providers in a way that is both hilarious and deeply relatable.
His journey in healthcare began at just 17 years old as a patient transporter. Passionate about nursing from the start, he earned his BSN in 2014 from the University of Central Florida (UCF) and served as President of the Florida Nursing Student Association. Even as a student, he was an advocate for change-in 2013, he founded Banned4Life, a movement that played a key role in ending the FDA's lifetime ban on gay men donating blood.
After graduation, Nurse Blake worked in Level 1 trauma centers across the country, but an unexpected passion for social media transformed his career. What began as funny Facebook videos to de-stress quickly went viral, earning him nearly 4 million followers and a devoted fanbase of nurses and nursing students worldwide. The New York Times even hailed him as a genuine phenomenon
World-Renowned Comedy Tours - Over 200,000 Tickets Sold
Now, he takes his signature humor beyond the screen with his sold-out stand-up comedy tours, which have sold over 200,000 tickets worldwide. His PTO Comedy Tour (2022) expanded from 14 cities to 55 due to overwhelming demand, and in 2023, he launched the Shock Advised Comedy Tour, a 100-city North American & International run filled with live skits, videos, and interactive stories from his nursing days.
His comedy has taken him to some of the most iconic venues in the world, including the Sydney Opera House & The Chicago Theatre.
Founder of NurseCon at Sea - The Ultimate Nursing Conference
Beyond comedy, Nurse Blake is the founder of NurseCon at Sea, the most unique and exciting nursing conference in the world. Hosted on a cruise ship, NurseCon at Sea brings together thousands of nurses for top-tier continuing education, epic entertainment, and an unforgettable community experience. With continuing education courses, networking events, and high-energy shows, NurseCon at Sea is unlike any other conference-designed for nurses, by nurses.
More Than a Comedian - A Voice for Nurses Everywhere

Denny Menter | Live on the Patio

Denny is a passionate guitarist with a deep love for the songs that shaped his childhood. Whether strumming classic rock anthems, timeless pop hits, or nostalgic tunes from the '70s and '80s, he brings a personal touch to every note played.

A self-taught musician with an ear for melody, Denny finds joy in rediscovering the music that once filled his youth, translating those familiar sounds into fresh, vibrant performances.

From intimate jam sessions to full-on concert performances, Denny's guitar playing is a reflection of a lifelong connection to music. Every chord resonates with memories, and every song tells a story.

A veteran of many musical groups and projects over the last 30 years, Denny still enjoys opportunities to perform with groups on bass, electric or acoustic guitars. Recently his most passionate projects are individual performances in which he can get up close with an audience and play some familiar music, along with throwing in a few surprises.

Wilson Place Open for Tours to Celebrate the Girls Scouts

Something wonderful is happening at Wilson Place -- and you're invited to be part of it!
The Wilson Place will be open for a few special days next week -- with guided tours, a Girl Scout celebration, and an event honoring the next generation of historians.
(See the schedule below.)

This season, two members of Girl Scout Troop 3226 partnered with Wilson Place Museum to research and design signs for many of the artifacts displayed on the grounds -- including the sandstone wall, Paul Bunyan statue, Stout benches, and more.

Their project, completed as part of their Silver Award, helps visitors learn about 20 historical items positioned around the property and connect these artifacts to the people and stories that shaped Menomonie's past.

Not only did they design the labels, but they also created a comprehensive book featuring in-depth research on each artifact. This reference book is available in the Wilson Place Gift Shop and at the Menomonie Public Library.

We're celebrating their curiosity, dedication to accuracy, and commitment to preserving local history for others to enjoy.

Here's what's happening:

* Saturday, October 18
Guided Tours for the public on the hour from Noon to 4:00 PM
Experience the mansion, stroll the grounds, and visit the Gift Shop for locally inspired treasures. Advance Tour reservations are required to secure your spot.

* Sunday, October 19 - Girls Scout Appreciation Day!
Guided Tours from Noon to 5:00 PM
As a special thank-you, Girl Scouts in uniform and their families are invited to tour free of charge.
Advance Tour reservations are required to secure your spot.

* Wednesday, October 22
The Wilson Place Grounds and Gift Shop will be open from Noon to 4:00 PM -- a perfect afternoon to explore the grounds and see the troop's new interpretive signs. (No Tours that day)
--Then join us from 4:30 to 5:30 PM at the Menomonie Public Library for a celebration of the girls' achievement and the unveiling of their Wilson Place Outdoor Artifact Historical Reference Book, now available in the library's history section.

***Access to reserve a tour spot will be available later this week!
Stay tuned for details on how to reserve your time and experience Menomonie's living history up close. Just send a message to the Wilson Place Museum facebook page. :-)
