S. Carey & John Raymond Shadowlands with UWEC Jazz Ensemble 1

S. Carey and John Raymond have been playing music together for close to twenty years since their time studying music at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. While they both received training in jazz and classical music, their careers would soon head in very different directions. S. Carey would become the right-hand man to Justin Vernon as a part of Bon Iver; collaborate as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer with the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Low, and Bruce Hornsby among others; and release four albums of his own to critical acclaim from Pitchfork, NPR, and more. John Raymond, on the other hand, would become a Grammy-nominated trumpeter and composer steering jazz in the right direction (Downbeat Magazine); release eight albums garnering praise from the New York Times, Stereogum, and others; and teach on faculty at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.

In 2019, the two reunited and began experimenting on what their artistic voices would sound like together. Producer Sun Chung (formerly with ECM Records) came on board shortly after, and together they enlisted a cast of A-list musicians to help flesh out the music including pianist Aaron Parks (Terri Lyne Carrington, Terence Blanchard), bassist Chris Morrissey (Norah Jones, Mark Guiliana), and guitarist Dave Devine (Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band), as well as Australian indie-pop songwriter Gordi.

Their self-titled album Shadowlands released in 2023 to critical acclaim from the New York Times, Paste Magazine, Stereogum, Flood Magazine, Under the Radar and more.

For this special performance, Shadowlands will be collaborating with UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble I under the direction of Robert Baca and will perform the world premiere of new arrangements of the Shadowlands music for jazz ensemble. Over the years, UWEC Jazz Ensemble 1 has received two Grammy nominations, earned the prestigious DownBeat Magazine Best College Big Band award seven times, celebrated the release of 18 albums, and has received critical acclaim including praise from the New York Times citing the as one of the most well-regarded jazz studies programs in the country. This show will celebrate two of its distinguished alumni with the ensemble they got their start in and is not to be missed.

The Eau Claire Dark History Tour

Tickets on sale now!

Board the trolley as we investigate the seedy under belly of Eau Claire's backstory, sharing historic and modern tales of crime, scandal, and the just plain bizarre. From Eau Claire's very first murder to one of its most notorious, from piles of dead horses to detailed news reports of horrors and hauntings, ride along as we explore red light districts, lumber family drama, and some of the oldest grave sites in town. Not only will you exit the trolley to traverse a storied (and haunted?) footbridge, but your 'final destination' features an exclusive and highly rare opportunity to enter a nearly century-old cemetery chapel and discover what's hidden in the depths below. Many tours have already sold out or have only one ticket left, so act fast!

Pulling Together -- A Community Conversation

Join us for an engaging community session based on the new book Pulling Together: A Handbook for Community Change by Tom Mosgaller and Mike Breininger. The book shares real life stories of how everyday people can move from ideas to collaboration, build trust across divides, and create lasting positive change in their hometowns.

This 90 minute event will feature:

-An introduction to Pulling Together from the authors, including the story behind the book and a practical framework for driving change in local communities.
-A discussion with Jeff Yost, President and CEO of the Nebraska Community Foundation, who contributed the book's foreword as well as a chapter in the book. Jeff will highlight how philanthropy, leadership, and community action have transformed 270 hometowns across Nebraska.
-Q&A and book signing with the authors and Jeff Yost, along with opportunities to learn about the Pulling Together workbook and upcoming workshops.

This session is designed for anyone who cares about building stronger, more connected communities: neighbors, civic leaders, educators, faith leaders, business owners, and beyond. Come ready to listen, share, and imagine what is possible when we pull together.
